How Free Choice Began

Some of the things in the Quran are allegorical and we should not take them literally. For example
the Quran tells us about Adam and Eve being taught the name of animals. It wasn't the naming of actual animals but rather the initiation of conceptual thinking which was necessary for man's intellectual development. In the beginning Adam and Eve were instinctive beings like animals that live by instinct. Animals have been naked right to this day and so did Adan and Eve at one time. Animals to this this day are not capable of conceptual thinking and so did Adam in the beginning. The eating of the forbidden fruit was also an allegory to describe man's first act of disobedience to God. As a result of this disobedience, Adam and Eve came to be aware of the presence of evil. With this awareness, the concept of free choice began that enable human to discern right from wrong, good from evil. Evey human person is endowed with good and evil impulses implanted or embedded in him/her.

I think Satan has a specific role assigned by God to invoke the evil impulses in man - sort of colloborating with God to test mankind. I also think Satan would not end up in hell because God mentioned that He is giving Satan a respite - a time span to return to the fold.On Judgment Day
Satan would say to the sinners "Don't blame me. I never had the power to make you evil. I only invoked you evil impulse and you responded. Blame yourselves" Religion has a specific task too and that is to appeal to the good impulse of man.
