Why do many Chinese Malaysians like to sport American names like Kelvin, Peter, Ann and Shirley
Not all of them are Christians though. It could be of Western culture that comes in through music. movies and magazines, Or it could be because a Chinese name is long. A name always comes in three components for example Lim Goh Tong. The third reason I think, its fashionable to have a name they perceive identifiable with the supposedly superior American culture.
The Malays on the other hand, have almost dropped out altogether, the traditional Malay names in favor of Arabic names. This is understandable. They have been practicing Islam for 500 years.
As for me I am the odd one out. I gave International names to all my children based on two things. First the name must consists of two Syllable only so that its easy on the tongue. Secondly it must be internationally recognizable for example people will know that the name Mimi refers to a person and not a fruit or a hand bag
