It is good to see that Malaysians today are talking about unity after seeing the people drifting into
ethnic polarization. Unity is not like what the tourist brochures like to describe. But there was no polarization during my time when Malays, Chinese and Indians played together and learned together in the same school. How we enjoyed those days, going camping, and not pressured by the demand of getting straight As.
Our education system is supposed to be built on the foundation of "Razak Report" which spells out clearly that the objective is to achieve national unity. But our politicians messed up the original set up.
In the name of nationalism, they did away with the English medium schools and replaced them with Malay and Chinese medium schools. That was the first damage done. The second damage was when they started racial politics and talked with racial slur in order to win votes.
The original objective of education as outlined in the "Razak Report" has been forgotten and buried by our obsession for Straight As
Striaght As won't save us from racial turmoil but the educational objective based on "Razak Report", can save us from having to face the night mare of May 13 again
